Active Schools Flag
The Active Schools / Blue Flag programme is run by the Department of Education and Skills, to recognise schools who strive to achieve a physically educated and active school community. We have been working towards achieving this flag since Autumn 2021.
The mascot and slogan competition at the outset produced very creative entries, with ‘Don’t Delay, Be Active Today’ emerging as victorious. The reminder of ‘Be Active Your Way – 60 Minutes Every Day’ helps to encourage the children to be active in whatever way they like each day. Finally, the Active School Code is ‘GET FIT’ which stands for:
Go on a Run
Exercise is Fun
Taney School says Being
Fit is Cool
If you Exercise Every Day
Taney School will say “Hip Hip Hooray”
We have been working on different strands of the PE curriculum, including dance and gymnastics modules. We hold an Active Week in June every year which is always great fun! The Active School Committee is made up of a junior committee with pupils from 1st to 6th Classes along with teachers Mrs Duffy, Ms Gorman, Ms Hall, Ms Handbidge, Mrs Hinds and Ms O'Rourke. It has a dedicated noticeboard in the corridor outside of 5th Class, where updates are regularly posted. All suggestions are welcome and can be submitted to Mrs McConnell.
Our Active School Committee meet regularly to keep us all up to date on what we need to do to earn our Active Flag and to organise activities like movement breaks, our active walkway and playground leaders.
The PTA and Sports Committee play a vital role in planning and coordinating activities that support the Active School Flag initiative.
