Last week we had a very special week. We learned lots about our differences, about how our brains all work differently, about different families and about living with a disability. We finished the week off with an expressive hair day where the children were encouraged to wear as wild and outrageous hair styles as they could!
We had some guest speakers in school too – Amy Nolan from the Irish Cancer Society spoke to both Junior and Senior assemblies. She explained how much we can all support each other when someone is sick. We also had a talk from Renaith Keane who brought in Casey, their family assistance dog. She explained how Casey is a working dog and what she does to assist and support her son. Finally, Fifth and Sixth class had a talk from Michelle Collins who works for Childline. They discussed how important it is to reach out and talk to someone if something is bothering you.
Senior classes got to have a try at using a wheelchair and discovered that while it seems like great fun at first, it is actually really difficult to navigate around obstacles.
To conclude, this week we learned lots about supporting each other but we also all learned how important acceptance is– every one is different and that’s cool!
